Absence (with verifications)
Papers lay on the floor of my studio as I painted the picture “Absence”. I was interested in capturing the essence of a monochrome abstract painting as well as the idea of a literal all-coherent history painting. I was so captured by this task and the seemingly endless labor on the canvas that I did not realize what my brush created on the side of the painting. I dried off access paint on papers lying on the floor. I put each sheet away when there was no clear paper left for me to exploit. When the painting was done all papers lay in a corner of the studio as trash. It was a vital decision for me to choose to employ the papers in an installation with the painting. This painting is a finalized object. The papers were pure process. They are in the title referred to as “Verifications”.
